A communications expert with more that 30 years experience and expertise, David Kalson will join us in Trinidad and
Tobago for a riveting Risk, Crisis and Trust conference on June 15th and 16th 2010.
David provides strategic counsel to clients and manages communications programs relating to corporate and product
positioning, issues and crises management, capital markets and internal communications. He has extensive experience
in science-related issues and businesses from a variety of sectors including energy, environment, chemicals, consumer
products and healthcare. , He has expertise in pharmaceuticals and medical devices relating to hematology, oncology,
immunology, neuro-muscular diseases and mental illnesses.
David has this to say about crisis and issues management:"After being involved with a wide range of crisis communications,
including crisis plans, for both the private and public organizations, I believe that effective crisis communication
boils down to a few main principles: Tell your story first and tell it fast, with complete candor while showing sincere
empathy for victims, whether real or perceived".
He has counseled companies and organizations that include energy clients Entergy; Areva; Repsol YPF; NRG Energy;
Canaport LNG; Irving Oil, and New York Regional Interconnect on issues ranging from nuclear power and public safety;
transmission lines and Smart Grid infrastructure, pipeline and facility sitings; emerging renewable energy technologies;
and carbon reduction initiatives. He has also provided counsel for environmental communications strategies for financial service and consumer products companies such as Bank of America, Staples and Dunkin' Brands. He has led programs that address highly emotionally charged issues such as environmental accidents, climate change, product contaminations and recalls, and he has extensive experience interacting with lobbying and government relations firms on behalf of legislative initiatives at state and federal levels.
Kalson is an adjunct instructor at the Fordham University Graduate School of Business where he teaches crisis management. He has authored numerous articles, speeches and annual reports including feature articles for World Book's Science Year, The Rockefeller University and PRNews. He has won two consecutive first prizes for Narrative Presentation from The American Business Communicators Group's annual report competition for his annual reports. He has been an invited lecturer and symposium arranger for the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Johns Hopkins University, Iona University, the Institute of Public Relations, the American Physical Society and the Council of Engineering and Scientific Society Executives.
A former television producer for PBS, Kalson has extensive background in writing and producing programs that translate technical subjects into formats accessible to lay audiences. Prior to joining Ruder Finn, he was Manager of Public Information for the American Institute of Physics for six years. There he produced the series "Science TV Report" -- science video news releases shown in over 100 TV news markets around the country where he often worked with renowned scientists at institutions such as IBM's Watson Research Center, Princeton University's Fusion Energy Program, Washington University's Positron Emission Tomography imaging program and the Stanford Linear Accelerator. He also spent four years in Hill and Knowlton's Division of Scientific, Technical and Environmental Affairs, and five years with the E. Bruce Harrison Company specializing in science- and technology-related communication.
Kalson has a B.A. in Philosophy and an M.A. in Communications from the University of Wisconsin in Madison.
